Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Joann Rose Campbell. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, sister and friend.

Joann passed away on July 10th, 2026, at her home in Winston Salem NC. Joann was born on April 18th, 1951, in Joliet Illinois to Frances Clara Hall Mathis and Richard Joseph Shields. She was 75 years old.

Joann lived a life filled with love and laughter, always surrounded by her cherished family and friends. She was predeceased by her loving parents Frances and Richard, as well as her brothers Richard Joseph and Gary Thomas and sister Vivian Mae.

Joann leaves behind a legacy of love through her surviving family, her husband Ronald Campbell, her devoted son Robert James and daughter in law Sonja Faye, her stepdaughter Michelle, her grandchildren Joanna Beth, Jessica Marie-(Brooks), Anne Marie-(Bradley), Brenda Carol-(Henry), Alyssa Elizabeth, William, Dakota, and Ethan along with 16 great grandchildren, her dear sisters Pauline-(Nicholas), Betty-(Val) and her brothers James and Jonathon along with her beloved nephews John, William, James, and nieces Frances and Vivian, as well as her friend John and her dog Sammy.

In 1986 Joann moved to Winston-Salem to be closer to her son, who was her pride and joy. She quickly became a treasured member of the community. She was married to Ronald Campbell, with whom she has shared many years.

Joann was known for her quick wit and radiant smile, always ready with a joke to brighten the day. Her gift for making others feel welcome and valued was unmatched. Her kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Joann had a passion for baking, and her kitchen was often filled with the comforting aromas of her delicious creations. In her later years she dedicated herself to family and friends, cherishing every moment spent with those she loved. Her legacy of love and laughter will continue to live on through children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who were the light of her life.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Trellis Hospice Care and Johnson Funeral Home for their professionalism and kindness during this difficult time.

Joann’s spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched, and her memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
